cocksI’m interested in sex. I’m also interested in design, typography, and hand-lettering. It’s not often my interests combine.

Today is the first in what I hope is an ongoing series… Fucking Fonts.

Fucking Fonts #1: Soviet-era Erotic Alphabet Book

You know Russians are some kinky fuckers, right?

These images are scans from an alphabet book created in 1931 as part of Soviet literacy campaign. The Cyrillic letters were hand painted by future “people’s artist” Sergei Merkurov. The scans come courtesy of Остров Крым (The Common Man) and commentary is courtesy of Ross Wolfe.

Check out the flying disembodied cocks. There’s also a couple of Centaurs, horny angels, and an inexplicable, over-excited monkey.

  1. I can’t figure out why I am the first to comment. There is so much deliciousness here! Russian kinksters! Disembodies cocks! Mythological creatures!

I think my favorite is the X. It looks like the woman has been giving a lovely round of spanking before her acrobatic balancing act. Nice pink cheeks!

    • I think my favorite is the X.

I know, right? That might be my favorite, too. I wouldn’t have ever thought to depict people in that position… from that angle! Leave it to the Russians… they’re a beautiful people, really… ;)

      • There is a Russian I am acquainted with who piques my interest. We had a fascinating conversation about porn addiction. I think I was flirting outrageously with him.

Maybe I should send him this alphabet. He might get ideas. ;-)

        • I think I was flirting outrageously with him.

There’s nothing wrong with flirting with Russians… just keep in mind they might not flirt back so well. :) (Not for lack of trying!)

  2. Wow! I glanced at this yesterday, but came back to look again. Those Russians weren’t nearly as staid as I thought they were. I find the winged cocks to be particularly amusing.

    • Those Russians weren’t nearly as staid as I thought they were.

I know, right? This sorta debunks the whole idea that Russians are uptight… especially since this book was commissioned as part of a national literacy campaign.

  3. *Laugh* You *GO* Comrade!

  4. You might know about this already, but just in case, sherwin-prague on DeviantArt has an amazing bondage alphabet.

    • Thanks for the tip, Star! I have a growing folder of ‘fucking fonts’ links, and I’ll most certainly add sherwin-prague’s to the list. They’re lovely! Really beautiful work. Wow.

  5. Reminds me of medieval biblical manuscripts. If you look carefully at them there are often very kinky pictures around the text. Wonder about creating/looking for one in Arabic script. :) (my second language) so many curves to play with….
    Thank you.
Ps sorry for being late to the party.

  6. Wonder about creating/looking for one in Arabic script. :)

I’ve been thinking about doing something similar — someday, I’d like to make my own book (from scratch). I have no idea what I’d put in it, though. :)

  7. Hilarious. Thanks for posting the link to Ross Wolfe’s commentary, that was very interesting. Apparently the part about the alphabet being part of an official literacy campaign was a joke.

    (Also that’s a faun/satyr, not a centaur.)

I think your blog is brilliant and one of the few truly funny sex blogs I’ve found so far.

Ack! You’re right, of course. :)

Thank you. :) Sometimes I feel the same way. :D
