The other day, I found myself rereading passages from Romeo and Juliet (which isn’t something I’m very fond of doing, even though Shakespeare is a little kinky). In my reading, I discovered Juliet has a dominant streak and a sadistic bent. For his part, Romeo seems to be a willing submissive.

When she says goodnight, Juliet says that if she had her way, she’d capture Romeo in shackles and chains. When Romeo seems amenable, Juliet suggests she might kill him with her love.

Go Juliet.  :)  If only the scene had ended with “[Exeunt, pursued by a bear]” the whole thing would have been a lot more exciting.

romeo the submissive and juliet the sadistJuliet:

‘Tis almost morning, I would have thee gone—
And yet no farther than a wan-ton’s bird,
That lets it hop a little from his hand,
Like a poor prisoner in his twisted gyves,
And with a silken thread plucks it back again,
So loving-jealous of his liberty.

Romeo:

I would I were thy bird.

Juliet:

Sweet, so would I,
Yet I should kill thee with much cherishing.
Good night, good night! Parting is such sweet sorrow,
That I shall say good night till it be morrow.

  1. Hm! Suddenly, I find myself interested in watching or reading Romeo And Juliet (hardly my favorite Shakespeare play) again!

    • @Week Bi Week: I don’t hate Shakespeare, but the plays aren’t something I’d sit down and read again for fun. I have no many other things I want to read on my “to-read” list first…

Too many books… to little… you know. :)

  2. When I was an undergrad, I wrote my senior seminar thesis on BDSM themes in Shakespeare. Funny, my professor never looked at me the same way again. ;-)

    • @GingerAyle: Shakespeare was a kinky boy. But then again, so are many of the great thinkers… perhaps there’s a connection. :)
